HISTORY of Sport AR Runabout, drawing n.67 by Carlo Riva:
Riva Corsaro is considered by enthusiasts as the father of all the fast runabouts (racing runabouts) built by Carlo Riva.
This type of hull was the first to be produced in series, with a total of 40 units built from 1946 until 1955.
If the model was first identified with the initials AR and followed Carlo Riva's design No. 39, then in 1950-1951 it first went to design No. 67 and then in 1952 to No. 72.
Furthermore, starting from this year the decision was made to give a name to each series and the name Corsair was chosen to identify this model, evoking the sporty spirit of the boat ideal for sea raids.
The analogies with the automotive world (in particular with the iconic Cisitalia) are continuous: the profile is very compact and has rounded lines, conveying the feeling of being in front of a real sea spider. A further distinguishing feature, in addition to the small windscreen, is the typical barrel-shaped stern that seamlessly joins the sides and the deck.
There is only one cockpit and it is positioned towards the bow to accommodate three people on board. The solution of a fourth seat for an additional guest in a seat located inside a locker in the aft area of the stern deck is unusual but very functional.
The unit in question was built in 1951 for a famous member of a historic Italian aristocratic family.
The boat spent a long time in the United States before returning to Europe in 2007.
The 1951 series is characterised by the dashboard covered entirely in vipla and methacrylate; the two-spoke steering wheel; stronger windscreen side supports and the blue vipla upholstery. The seat is also in the same colour shade with a Scottish Saran interior in red and blue tones. The hull is painted red with two white waterline stripes.
As a real spider, this AR is powered by a 112 hp Gray Marine inboard engine that allows it to easily exceed a top speed of 35 knots.
Considering the construction, this AR is made entirely of mahogany planking with the sides and the deck in Honduran mahogany and the bottom in larch planks. The stringers and the central band are in maple and therefore lighter than the dark colour of the mahogany. The planking is screwed to the frames from the inside with brass screws.
The AR model immediately attracted important owners such as the Negroni family, Carlo Dusio, actress Alida Valli and oilman Attilio Monti.
At the time, the price of the boat ranged from 1.745.000 to over 2.000.000 Italian lire depending on the type of motorisation chosen.
